From quantum phenomena to molecular junctions

Dynamics of H-bond plays a central role in determining physical and
chemical properties of diverse systems from isolated molecules in gas
phase to condensed matters and biological systems. We visualized
nuclear quantum dynamics in H-bond exchange motion of a water dimer by
STM. In the second part of the talk, I present our more recent work on
making a single-molecular junction with the STM. We produced a
molecular with a STM tip, to study the molecular junction conductance
in a well-defined environment. The junction can be formed and released
in a reproducible way, which allows us to investigate the junction
conductance as a function of the anchoring groups, side groups, and
its environment with unprecedented precision.
